    1. Preparation

Before going on the water, you need to choose the right equipment and know how to use the equipment correctly. Basic topics to think about:

What am I wearing? What are my options? How will the equipment affect my planned activity? Do you know how to use personal safety equipment? What equipment do I use? What are the possibilities of using the equipment? Why should you prefer one over the other? How to use the equipment? What to do with problematic equipment? Think about what additional equipment could be useful on the shore?

    2. On the shore

When going out on the water, you should have a vision of your chosen paddling spot and how to get to it. The main topics to think about are: water and weather (wind, thunder, precipitation).

Think about these factors and ask yourself questions to make sure you are making the right decision.

    Factor:Type of water body

What you should know: Are you in stagnant or flowing water? What is the current water level? How does it affect your day on the water? Where is it allowed to go and are there restricted areas on the road?

    Factor:Weather

What to watch? What's the weather forecast? How does wind speed and direction affect you?

    Factor:Access to water

What is the most accessible place to start? How to reduce possible damage to the shore when going into the water? What are the best techniques for entering and carrying the boat? Could you need some aids?

    3. On the water

While on the water, you should be aware of your surroundings and other water users. The main skills are being able to stay calm in any situation and the ability to steer the boat.

    Factor: Other users

You should take into account who or what else is moving on the water. What is the etiquette? How can I reduce disturbance to aquatic life?

    Skill: Boat Control

You should know: How to move forward and steer the boat? How to brake and get back to the start? How does your body position affect the boat?

    4. After paddling

Every time you spend on the water is an opportunity to learn something new and become more skilled. When thinking about the next times, it is very useful to make an adequate summary of the day.

Jdon't others:It is helpful to watch other paddlers while on the water. What techniques do they use? Do they paddle differently than you? What could this be due to?

Rate your experience:What did you learn today? What went well? What could you have done differently? How did your choice of gear affect today's experience? What skills would you like to focus on next time? Did you become interested in exploring another discipline or area of rowing?

    5. Further development

Each day spent on the water develops your skills and knowledge, creating more and more pleasant experiences on the water. Since no two experiences are exactly the same, you always learn something new.

Continuous analysis of the decisions made ensures the development of natural decision-making ability. If you wish, you can consider whether you want to specialize in a specific activity or continue on a discipline-specific development path, such as the Sea Kayak Award or Canoeing Award.
